Year 5
Thursday 15th October 2026 - Science
Year 5 have been busy budding scientists this week, carrying out an exciting dissolving experiment! They tested ten different materials in water to investigate whether they were soluble or insoluble. The children explored how water acts as a solvent and how the materials being dissolved are called solutes. They carefully observed each mixture to see whether the solute dissolved and formed a solution, or whether it remained visible in the water. The experiment was a fantastic opportunity to develop their scientific observation skills and deepen their understanding of dissolving!
Friday 9th October 2026 - RNCM - Ascension Church, Hulme
Today, our Year 5 children enjoyed a fantastic visit to Ascension Church, where they began an exciting new music project with Phil from the Royal Northern College of Music.
The children had the opportunity to explore brass instruments, including the trumpet and trombone, and share their existing musical knowledge with Phil, who was thoroughly impressed by their enthusiasm and understanding.
Despite the challenging weather, the children walked brilliantly to the church and demonstrated excellent behaviour throughout the visit. They had a wonderful time learning something new and getting hands-on with their instruments.
We’ll be returning to Ascension Church every three weeks, and we’re really looking forward to seeing the children’s confidence and musical skills develop throughout the year.
Well done, Year 5 — you’ve made a brilliant start to what promises to be an exciting musical journey!
Friday 25th September 2026 - Science Investigation - Thermal Conductors/Insulators
Our class took part in an exciting science investigation to discover which materials would make the best insulation for a coffee cup designed for a teacher. The children explored a range of insulating materials, making predictions about which would keep the water warm for the longest. They carefully wrapped their cups in different materials and measured the temperature of the water every five minutes, recording their results along the way. By comparing the temperature changes, the children were able to identify which material was the most effective at keeping the water warm. This hands-on investigation helped them develop their scientific skills, including predicting, measuring, observing and recording data, while applying their learning about heat and insulation to a real-life design challenge.

We are delighted to welcome a coach from Lancashire Cricket Club into school to work with our Year 5 children this half term, teaching them some of the key skills needed to play and enjoy cricket. The sessions are a fantastic opportunity for the children to develop their confidence, teamwork and sporting abilities while having fun together. As a school, we are proud to welcome sports clubs from our local community and value opportunities to work together for the benefit of our children. This reflects the Bible’s teaching in Ecclesiastes 4:9: “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.”
Wednesday 23rd September 2026
David and Tamara led a meaningful Celebration of the Word with our Year 5 class, focusing on the Baptism of Jesus. They read the Gospel together and reflected on the importance of Jesus’ baptism and God’s love for us.
The children were invited to take part in a special moment of prayer and reflection as a bowl of water was passed around the class. Each child had the opportunity to cross themselves with the water, remembering the Sacrament of Baptism and their own special connection with God.
It was a peaceful and reflective celebration, giving the children the opportunity to listen to and celebrate God’s Word together as a class.
Monday 14th September 2026
This afternoon we began our new science topic - Properties of Materials. We looked at why materials have certain properties and then carried out an investigation into the properties of some materials around our classroom. We specifically looked at magnetism, electrical conduction and transparency. We made a simple circuit to check whether the material was an electrical conductor.
Wednesday 9th September 2026
Today we explored the different ways in which we could visually represent numbers! We made a mess of the classroom with the manipulatives to show our understanding of place value. We had fun showing the many different ways in which we can show numbers!
Wednesday 2nd September 2026
Year 5 have had a fantastic first week! They have settled into their new routines really well and have enjoyed working together to create a set of class rules that will form our very own class contract. There were some wonderfully funny suggestions along the way—including having KFC for lunch every week!—although, sadly, that one didn’t quite make it onto the final contract! As we discussed, rules are important because they help us to live, learn and work together fairly and respectfully. This links beautifully with our new RE topic this half-term, Creation and Covenant, where we will explore the Ten Commandments and consider why God gave His people rules and guidance to help them live well together. It has been a brilliant start to the year, and we are so proud of how well all the children have settled in.
