Friday 21st March - Year 2 welcomed their families in today to watch their class assembly.
This week, we have been learning about the importance of hygiene in Year 2 so we decided to carry out an investigation during Science Week. We did the ‘Soap and Pepper Test’. The children made a prediction and then carried out the investigation.
Monday 3rd March - Today, the children had lots of fun at Old Trafford Library. They listened to some exciting stories, participated in a quiz, and explored all the different areas of the library. The staff were very welcoming and showed them how to scan and borrow books. They also had the opportunity to look at the computers, audiobooks, dual- language books, and larger print options. To top it all off, the children were able to use their World Book Day tokens to pick a book to keep! It was an enriching afternoon that fostered a love for reading.
February 2025 - Art and Design in Year 2: Painting and Mixed Media. The children looked at primary and secondary colours and then mixed the primary colours to discover what would be made. Next, the children looked at texture-how objects feel. They ‘zoomed in’ on objects and descibed how they felt and these words were recorded on paper. After that, the children painted parts of those objects by looking carefully at the colours and by choosing the best painting tool to use. For example: a fork, scrunched up tin foil, a cotton wool pad, the end of a a paintbrush or finger tips. The children homed in on the object and tried hard to show the texture of the objects using the paints they had mixed themselves. After trying out these different techniques and textures, the children then paired up and together, through discussion, designed an antarctic landscape. They worked really hard to create the sky, mountains, icebergs and water using a range of appropiate tools and an array of tones and shades. Finally, the children added more detail to their work by using chalks, pastels and felt tip pens. They made animals (penguins, seals) and igloos and stuck them onto their paintings to complete their pictures.
Computing in Year 2 - Tuesday 4th February - The children had a fantastic time exploring algorithms and programming robots. They learned how to make their robots move in different directions and navigate around obstacles. The children also enjoyed testing and debugging programs, enhancing their problem- solving skills along the way.
Design and Technology Project - This week, the children in Year 2 have worked really hard and carried out a project in Design and Technology. They looked at how to make different structures stable and how to strengthen materials. They did this by building and testing different card structures to destruction! Using this knowledge, they designed and made a strong and stable chair for Baby bear to sit on.
Linked to our Great Fire of London topic, the children in Year 2 learned how to sing London’s Burning in rounds and then performed it for you to see.
It has been lovely to meet all our Year 2 Parents and Grandparents over the last couple of weeks. We have been able to discuss the importance of reading at school and at home and look at how we teach reading in our school using Read Write Inc. Following the meetings, it was lovely to see the children and their families explore our newly refurbished library and take the opportunity to enjoy reading for pleasure, fostering a love for books and storytelling.
We have had so much fun in Year 2 today, on National Poetry Day. We studied a poem called Flicker, by discussing the meaning of each word and each line of the poem. Then we learned how to recite the poem aloud using lots of expression. Next, we added very clever actions to our poem. Finally, we performed our poem in front of Year 3. They were very impressed with our clear voices. The following day, we added music to our poem by using a variety of percussion instruments. The instruments helped us to show the flame growing and gaining energy and power. The instruments also showed the flame being reduced to just a tiny flicker and then dying off. We then performed our poem once again. This poem is linked to our History topic about The Great Fire of London in 1666.
Flicker by the Year 2 class!
In our Art lessons this week we investigated maps of London from our topic, The Great Fire of London in 1666, and used them as a stimulus for drawing our own 2D maps. We then looked at some artworks created by Emma Johnson, which in turn inspired us to create relief maps (another word for 3D) of our original 2D drawing, using layers of materials.
What a great start we have had in Year 2! Our children have worked super hard. They have enjoyed being DETECTIVES and finding out about the past. In small groups, they looked very carefully at maps of London over hundreds of years. They made a time line by rolling out tissue paper on the hall floor and then they placed the maps in the correct order (chronological order). They discovered just how much London has changed and grown over time.
